Are Digital Skills more important then Coding?
Digital skills are in big demand and if you take a look at the top 10 skills employers are looking for in 2018 most are built around these skills. So, that begs the question – Are Digital skills more important then coding?
A few years ago the Department of Education, realising that IT literacy in the UK was falling behind the rest of the world, introduced the new computer curriculum into schools. For those of you who don’t know, this is mostly (but not totally), based around computer coding.
As an IT educator I have successfully taught computer coding to primary school children – I have also taught digital skills based around Google Cloud, but not exclusively, as I slowly introducing other cloud platforms that become instantly available once you have a Google email account.
Digital skills allows children to pick and choose what tools they will use to complete a task or produce a piece of work or graphic for a website or project. They start to make use of the 4 C’s – Collaboration, Creativity, Communications and Critical Thinking, major skills employers are looking for in 2018.
So, should digital skills be part of the national curriculum along with coding and should Ofsted recognise the schools who offer these very important skills when schools are inspected. I think they should.
Not for profit digital skills training. Aldwyn Primary School Digital Skills Center is now looking for sponsors, partners and funding.
