Primary school children prove that they can master important digital skills at a young age – I am proud to have headed up this project.

Aldwyn Primary School has just completed one of the biggest digital skills project that any primary school has ever untaken. Right from the start we decided we wanted to share the end result with the wider community, parents and every primary school in Greater Manchester.
The group of children involved are called the “Digital Leaders” and these 8 to 11 years old’s effectively created a small “new startup” IT / Media company and set about producing their own e-safety business cards, child friendly posters and finally an e-safety website which has been published to the world. You need to pause a minute and take a breath to fully understand what children have achieved. Digital skills are in big demand and Lord Mayor, Andy Burnham, is promoting Greater Manchester as a leading digital centre. Google’s Digital Garage has opened its doors on King Street, Manchester and their digital bus is currently touring towns around Greater Manchester offering free digital skills.
While all this is happening, children at Aldwyn Primary School are already leading the way by moving most of its work onto the Google Cloud platform. This different way of working has given children major digital and communications skills for life and some of the top ten skills employers are looking for in 2018.
Digital skills for all – non profit digital skills training.
The second aim of this project is to show that children can learn lifelong digital and communications skills that can be used in high school, college or university and later on in employment. This is called digital inclusion, making sure children have the right skills to begin with and become 21st learners.
We want to do our best to encourage other primary schools to follow our lead and let children start to work in a very 21st century way and at the same time narrow the north south skills divide. With that in mind Aldwyn Primary School is now looking at ways in which we can offer some free digital skills community training to other schools. This has been a unique community and communications project that would have been impossible to do a few years ago and children have taken full advantage of the most advanced technology Google can offer. We would like to think that we are the first primary school in Greater Manchester and possibly the country to complete a project like this with children in primary school. It’s a project that has shown if given the chance, children can work in a very adult way using important digital skills and produce a very professional looking community e-safety website that everyone can access and make us of.
