Projects and Other Work
A lot of my work is supporting school IT and part of my role is to move schools forward and improving IT / ICT services. At the sametime I aim to save the school money by finding the best prices and deals for equipment. As well as the schools I work for I have completed many projects for other schools such as PC and file server upgrades.
I tend to photograph and record all of my project work and this page is a history of some of my work along with other services offered.
Old Computer Suite - but how to add more computers?
Addition of the centre island
Small cupboards to house computers
Centre island in place
Power & Networking
Completed computer suite
33 new, modern and fast computers
21.5 inch monitors for easy viewing
Modern and well used computer suite
The problem with Our Lady of Mount Carmel was how to get an extra 15 computers into an already full computer suite. I had planned on replacing all the old computers with fast base units connected to 21.5 inch screens which would maximise the student experience and allow work to be done in all areas of ICT such as coding, video editing, graphics editing and cloud computing.
The solution was to add a centre island to fill the empty space in the middle of the suite. This allows for the extra computers, making the total of 33. A full class could now use the suite without the need for students to share PC’s
At the same time I updated the network infrastructure by replacing all the aging network switches bring the speed up the 1 gigabyte. This ensured fast logon, quicker access to the curriculum file server and internet access.
The result, as can been seen from the slideshow, is a modern, up to date and very well used computer suite. Along with the school’s Android and Apple tablets, the new suite brings together both sides of ICT give students access to both desktop and portable IT.
Google Apps Roll Out
One of the most exciting projects recently undertaken is the roll out of Google Apps for Education. A successful roll out requires carefully planning to make sure that the system is child safe and measure have been put into place to allow monitoring of students email and to stop students contacting users outside of the school domain.
Once setup up, a Google account gives access to lots of free resources and for the first time allows both staff and students to share and access files and folders from home. I have worked with Saf Chaudry from in2learn at Arundale Primary School to give access to Google Apps for year 5 and year 6.
He is now working with both year groups and gradually lessons are being move from the local file server to the cloud.
Our Lady of Mount Carmel Primary School is also beginning to move folders and documents into the cloud allowing work to be accessed and completed at home. This allows parents to see and monitor students homework in a way that’s has not been available before.
Google Classroom is next big roll out. A complete and free system for setting and marking homework online.
